As the temperature starts to drop, one of the most common questions we get asked in the shop is: “what weight rug does my horse actually need?” It depends on a few things — your horse's coat, whether they're clipped, how much natural shelter they have, and how hardy they are as an individual. Here's our guide to help you choose with confidence.

    0g (no fill) turnout rugs

These are waterproof, breathable outer layers with no insulation - ideal for horses with a full natural coat who just need protection from wind and rain during milder autumn weather.

    50g – 100g (lightweight)

A good option for horses starting to feel the chill as the coat thins from clipping, or for those living out with decent natural shelter. This range works well for early autumn and mild winter days.

200g and above (midweight to heavyweight)

Best suited to clipped horses, older horses, or those who feel the cold more, especially once temperatures properly drop in late autumn and winter. If your horse is fully clipped, this is usually where you'll want to be for turnout.

A few things to factor in

Clip type matters just as much as the weather - a fully clipped horse will need more warmth than an unclipped one in the same conditions. Shelter access, age, and how well your individual horse holds condition all play a part too.

Not sure where to start? Pop into the shop at Vale View or give us a call - we're always happy to talk through what's right for your horse before you buy.
